The deconstructed kitchen island counter made from carrara marble.

When designing the bedrooms, Venea stressed that it was very important for the family to feel like they were one with the earth, and she used organic materials and warmer colors to emulate that feel. Behind the bed is a ledge created with Zellige tiles to mimic a tiled headboard. “It is beautiful, but it’s perfectly imperfect as I tell people,” says Venea of the hand-cut tiles. “I really think it goes well with the desert. It’s an earthy material. We incorporated tile in a lot of places that people don’t normally do.”

The former sunroom, now a guest room, has a 1970s armchair by Bruno Rey.

The kitchen features custom-lacquered cabinets with white oak handles and, in lieu of upper cabinets, a wall niche to display dishes.

The basement-level family room connects with a guest bedroom that features a painting by Marleigh Culver.

The living room features a Noguchi lantern, a velvet Soriana sofa by Afra and Tobia Scarpa, Ingo Maurer Uchiwa 6 fan lights, and a teak Hans Wegner credenza.

Rocks dug up during construction were saved and incorporated into the poured-concrete floors and walls. Hydronic heating coils in the floor are augmented by a wood stove during the damp winters.

The architects incorporated sustainably sourced parota wood into the living room’s sunken seating area. The Turn Tall side table is from Blu Dot, and the pillows are from West Elm.

The clients enjoy boating and kayaking and often utilize the site’s direct water access. “There’s a boathouse at the bottom of the site, so we’ve tried to clean the view up,” says architect Fraser Mudge of the framing. “We also controlled the height of it a little bit to frame the beauty of the water and the National Park, rather than the sky.”

The Brutalist estate is south-facing and placed on a steep lot, giving the home access to natural light. “During lockdown three, we were trapped at home with our beautiful cats, lounging the whole time, learning the way the sunlight would move through the space,” says Grimshaw.
