LaMarque activated an unused area under the stairs by adding a built-in bench to create a dining area.

An oversized entrance door leads to an angled hallway that obscures views to create an element of surprise. The Vollen bench in Custom Red Lacquer is from Chadhaus.

A bright yellow front door adds a bold pop of color to the minimal exterior palette.

Homeowner Simon Doonan stands next to the front door. "We have flamboyance, and we’re not inhibited about anything. [Architect] Gray Organschi gave [the house] that intellectual rigor needed to make it beautiful. We were well matched."

The family dining table was specially designed by Turett using wood that his daughter had milled from a fallen spruce tree.

The family kitchen was purchased off of a showroom floor from the Italian company, Valcucine. It was completely modular in design so the architect could rearrange and assemble it to his liking.

Shands paired maple wood kitchen cabinets with veined marble countertops to provide character to the space without overwhelming it. "These materials, complemented by the open shelves with stacked ceramics, are key to the experience," she says. Sub-Zero undercounter refrigerators and freezer opened the kitchen up to allow for more counter space.

Dyer inserted new wood inlay in the kitchen floors.

"I often choose finishes that allow the natural texture to show through, and finishes that emphasize the cathedrals and burls of the graining,

The couple has two rescue dogs, Wren and Lint.

The design team retained the old supports, which now frame the kitchen. Jessica picked DeVol cabinets and systems for their traditional-meets-streamlined style.

A special finish brings out the grain in the kitchen's walnut cabinetry.
