The screening room and living area is off the kitchen, and opens to the garden.

Much of the original furniture remains in the home, including wooden bookshelves set into concrete room dividers. “I find the way he resolved the corners with obtuse angles quite beautiful,” writes Maria. “He used the same detail for both the table and the bookcase. The photographers were drawn to the materials in addition to the form of the furnishings. “I love all the materials inside the house, especially those that were used by Riva to create the furniture,” says Francesco Paleari, who with Allegra Martin shot the apartment for the first time in decades for the book.

The cabin is serving as their home until they build a bigger one on the larger part of the property.

Solid wood countertops and drawer pulls from CB2 and Ikea complete the kitchen.

The barn-style front doorsstay open during warmer months, giving a view of Eugenia’s garden. A floating desk, Hay Design coffee table and separate couch offer additional seating in the downstairs area.

The duo built the home using concrete footings and oriented strand board (OSB). They raised a steel frame for the structure, which will make it easy to relocate it in the future, if needed.

While they may resemble shipping containers, the pods are actually built of wood and clad in corrugated steel.

In Southern Mississippi, hurricanes are a very real concern. Mark and Madison ensured decisions were made with storm-resistance in mind: for instance, sturdy aluminum-clad windows instead of vinyl-clad.

Manny finished the house with architect Esteban Paredes. For the kitchen they created custom cabinets using lacquered MDF.

A simple shed-like form disguises a taste for the contemporary and detailed craftsmanship.

Though the house's design was inspired by old sheds and barns, its glass walls give the home a contemporary feel and fill the interior with light, even on cloudy days.

The house sits in an established neighborhood filled with 1940s Cape Cods and bungalows from the 1920s and ’30s. As with many of our projects, we wanted to respect the scale of the neighborhood, even if it was a contemporary house, & make sure the house read pleasantly from the street in the context of the houses around it. Kinetic screens are utilized here to enclose the carport & allow the homeowner to attach outdoor art.

The home is clad in corrugated iron coated with Zincalume. “We chose the cladding so we could curve the metal sheets and create barrel vaulted roofs,” says architect William Samuels. “The finish gives a natural reflection to the surface of the house, picking up on the colors of the surrounding bush and the changing daylight.”

The clients wanted a summer home that would allow them to enjoy the landscape from both inside and outside spaces—and the outdoor spaces needed to be protected from the often windy weather. “That’s why we have the outdoor space to the north of the building, so it’s protected,” explains architect Line Solgaard. The protected deck area gets the evening sun until 10pm in the summer, and views to the water have been maintained through large windows and the glazed wall.
