One of the first things the couple does on a summer morning is slide open the floor-to-ceiling glass doors to let the fresh air and the forest into the house.

Besides coming in Arctic White or Cyberspace (the charcoal grey shown above), the standard fiber cement lap siding is available in three other colors. The model pictured here also showcases a mirrored layout with the entrance situated on the right.

In the living room, 18’-high expanses of glass fosters a strong indoor-outdoor connection.

The kitchen received new walnut flooring that echoed the millwork in the family room. The custom cabinetry is a mix of hickory and oak painted a neutral gray. The dark countertops are Pietra de Cardoza.

The dining area is raised up from the rest of the living space, reached by a few steps covered in fieldstone. Bold color choices for the light fixtures and chairs create a contrast with the stone walls and floor.

The roof is clad in natural cedar with a copper trim.

The house's cantilevering second floor gives the sense of floating above the landscape, while its black cladding helps it blend in deferentially among the trees.

In the living room, open brickwork along each side allows light and air to permeate the home.

Copper cladding will patina over time. Horizontally articulated windows and standing seams give the facade a sleek, streamlined presence.

In the living area, existing built-in seating is complemented by Mies van der Rohe lounge chairs and custom coffee tables by Michael James Moran.

“I had them take out some of the lines,” Chris says. “I’m a fan of ’60s Op art, and you get a 3-D effect if you lay them in the right way.”

Australian expats Carla and Paul Tucker tasked designer Dan Gayfer with expanding their Melbourne bungalow without adding any square footage. In the kitchen, a soft palette of wood, laminate, and tile created cohesion, impressive considering the clients didn’t see a single finish, color, or material in person prior to their homecoming. The faucet is by Brizo, and the sink is from Kräus. The backsplash is a handmade white ceramic tile that lends some organic irregularity to the scheme.
