The boldly cantilevered home rises to a prow-like peak, prompting some neighbors to nickname it “the ship.” The 3,875-square-foot house sits on 3.7 newly tamed acres. “When we first saw the place, there were mounds of earth and wild vegetation everywhere,” says Fabian. “We needed a tractor to clear it away. Now we enjoy walking around outside, and our dog, Lina, loves it.” The landscaping, like many of the less technical aspects of the restoration, was done by the couple.

The space also serves as Marc and John’s office.

The architects made sure to step back the upper-level addition so as not to overwhelm the scale of the surrounding neighborhood. Plus, "If we build on top of it, and try to make it a new and larger box, it will falsify the identity,

On the other end of the house, a separate structure houses a sauna, shower, and toilet.

Heath Ceramics opened a Los Angeles showroom in 2008. The bulk of the brand’s sales is the dishware, with the remaining 29 percent attributed to architectural tile, and 16 percent from select home goods.
