They may have built this family cabin economically, but view of the ocean is priceless.

Architect Ana Smud’s residence in the Vicente López suburb of Buenos Aires is surrounded by gardens and wrapped in timber, concrete, and glass.

One renovation request, homeowner Isaac Hase says, “was having a place to drop your shoes.” At the mudroom end of a run of kitchen cabinets, you’ll find another feature the couple asked for. “We wanted to have a dedicated, visible place for our little stash of cookbooks,” Karoline says.

“I’ve always been crazy about tile,” says Jessy, which is why she was heartbroken when she found the 1961 powder blue tile in the master bathroom had been scribbled on with permanent marker. “Turn right for cold water. Turn left for hot,” the wall read. The new tile is by Ann Sacks. “We tried to source products that looked appropriate for the period,” Jessy explains.

The shower features a bench and is a mix of Elba Blue Marble, Inax Yohen Border tiles, and concrete.

The bespoke bath rail in the master suite incorporates concealed plumbing, LED lighting, and functions as a shelf and towel rail.

Glazed skylights capture Aussie sunlight and the incredible night sky.

The master bathroom features a marble vanity with a mitered edge, with open shelves on the sides. To emphasize a minimalistic look, the custom steel-framed mirror is backlit with LED lights. A bi-parting sliding door made of black stained wood separates the toilet room and laundry room.

Floor-to-ceiling shelves and storage bookend a cabinet that conceals the television.

"Due to the shape of the lot, the house had to sit near an embankment," says architect Michael Scro of Z+ Architects, who worked with unusual dimensions to accommodate the siting of the home.

The two bedrooms on the first floor share a bathroom, which features a natural timber vanity, modern lighting, and a shower over tub.

Jennifer requested the Japanese-style outdoor soaking tub, but it’s enjoyed by the whole family. It was built by J&K Cedar Works for around $6,500.

Inside, Pine walls and ceilings received a dark stain, as did Oak floors.
