A cement staircase connects the main living areas with the upper mezzanine level, which houses the sleeping area, bathroom, and entrance to the private terrace.

“In Spain, there’s the inheritance of the bourgeois [floor plan] that has shrunk over time,” says Luzárraga. “Usually, the toilets have the worst places in the house: they’re not ventilated or illuminated naturally. We think this also has to do with a Catholic culture where flesh is sin. We wanted to turn this around and play with the concept of intimacy. It gives you a lot of pleasure to take a bath, so don’t we do it close to the window with light and air?”

To save on costs and lower the home’s carbon footprint, the architects bypassed the need for a heating system by devising a series of volumes that could trap heat in smaller spaces, like the wool-wrapped bedroom.

The interiors of the home feature light wood-paneled ceilings, large picture windows, and exclusive custom furniture and lighting also designed by Aalto.

Aalto designed Maison Louis Carré with an immense lean-to roof made of blue Normandy slate, "pitched in imitation of the landscape itself". The facade is built from white bricks and marble, while the base and parts of the walls are Chartres limestone.

The cabins, which are available to rent on AirBnB, are outfitted with all the basic essentials needed for a private getaway.

The 269-square-foot La Tagua cabin, seen on the left, is set downslope from the 204-square-foot La Loica cabin and is connected to the main road by three flights of stairs.
