Although it’s just 924 square feet, Maria and Louis Gabriel’s Los Angeles back house, designed by Jason Kerwin of OKB, packs in a lot of program, including a family room on the ground floor and an office and a guest suite upstairs. The siding is by James Hardie and the stairs are painted in Celluloid by Dunn-Edwards.

The view from the kitchen looks across the courtyard into the playroom. The Stones stools are by Maya Lin for Knoll; the kid-friendly Teflon-coated Cybele fabric curtain is by Jack Lenor Larsen.

The clean lines of the house’s minimalist façade is accented by standing-seam metal cladding.

The apartment above the garage received a dormer to enlarge the interior footprint.

Deep blue-painted cement-board panels, an offset roof peak, and black window frames balance the rich brown Ipe wood of the deck and garden.

Modern kitchen with a minimal palette

The light-filled living room features extensive glazing in the form of clerestory windows, skylights, and a brilliant wall of glass.

The view was pivotal in the design, and the living area features 180-degree views that bring the spectacular seascape into the interior. The soft, neutral palette complements the seascape.

Extensive glazing throughout helps interior spaces feel connected to the greenery and integrated into a vegetated setting, even though the house is located in a densely populated area of Bangalore.

Gebhardt sourced the dining room table from none other than Jack's dad, who built it for his son's family. The chairs are from Barnaby Lane.

"I wanted to create a really timeless base throughout the house while still incorporating some punches of color in areas like the bathrooms and in some of the furnishings,

Popham Design supplied the tiles in the bathrooms, were Gebhardt chose to incorporate more color.

The bathroom was enlivened with a wall of hexagonal blue Pratt & Larson tile.

The former laundry space was refashioned into a windowside booth, its built-in shelves, walls and ceilings painted red. It's become popular with kids and visitors.

The redesign created two arched passageways into the kitchen as part of a rebuilt dividing wall, improving circulation and doubling as built-in storage.

On the ground floor, the living room is anchored with soft furnishings contrasting the stark industrialism of granite floors and concrete walls. A Blueloft couch sits atop a carpet from Jaipur Rug Company, with a coffee table custom designed by CollectiveProject.

Laid out in a 270-degree panorama in front of the house is the frosty expanse of Cook Inlet, cascading rocky mountains, and a white sun as big as a dinner plate.
