The architects created a Japanese pagoda-style home to take advantage of the location.

The 1969 summer house needed a gut remodel—so Carisa Salerno and Aaron Levin rebuilt it piece by piece: “In the end, we feel like we built a sculpture, not a house.”

The new prefab unit is located just a few meters from the main home—a thatched-roof cottage that dates back to the 1950s. “The dark color of the cladding blends into the dark hedges in the garden, so the unit doesn’t attract too much attention,” says Vriesema.

In the original home, the renovation removed faux stone covering a fireplace to reveal the original stucco.

Studio Officina delivered a perfectly tailored renovation to the founders of androgynous fashion brand Kirrin Finch.

Located in La Unión, a city and commune in Chile’s Los Ríos region, Refugio 3x3 is set in a forest on the side of a new lot of residential houses that were built in response to the recent expansion of city limits.

The firm’s founder and principal architect Sumiou Mizumoto stripped away the house’s side extension.

The project was completed entirely remotely. Since then, the husband-and-wife team have moved back to Santiago, where they had met as young architects working for local firms.

Due to the soaring ceilings over the patio that open it up to the views—including impressive sunsets—heating the covered outdoor space was a challenge. The solution was found in the freestanding Bromic Eclipse Portable heater.

Hiroshi Nakamura & NAP used 87 translucent bricks to reframe a family’s connection to nature and the city.

The home features a combination of interior and exterior living spaces that afford privacy to the occupants. “There are social spaces for everyone to be together, but also spots outside the building where people can have a private coffee—and that’s so important,” says architect Line Solgaard.
