Jorge Pliego and Cony Mier built a home outside Mexico City with polished black concrete floors that have been rid of their top-most layer of gravel to reveal the terrazzo-like texture of the mixture. “The pigment is made from natural colorants and different types of earth,” says Agustín Pereyra, an architect who collaborated with Michel Rojkind on the house.

The black matte steel ship’s ladder was designed by Mickus to have open risers and bent-plate tread that forms a honeycomb pattern and fabricated locally. “We wanted it to be a much more open object,” says Mickus, so as not to block light or views. “The design makes it almost invisible when you're looking straight through it.”

The couple restored and matched some of the old trim to ensure it runs throughout the house. The old growth Redwood ceiling joists were also exposed, creating more intimacy in the kitchen below, and joined with a catwalk that connects to the refinished attic.

The new addition is spanned by a sliding glass door to the kitchen, bringing in much more natural light and creating easy flow between inside and out. The owners especially appreciate how the new deck is at grade with the exterior door for a seamless transition, making the kitchen feel “a part of the garden,” says the homeowner.
