White oak slats and cork cladding give texture to the facade of a house that architect Jack Becker designed for himself and his wife, landscape architect Maddie Hoagland-Hanson, in an alley in the Capitol Hill area of Washington, D.C. High awning windows let daylight in while preserving privacy.

The site-specific project was placed between pine trees in front of an earthen wall that leads to Tadao Ando’s Langen Foundation, an art museum also located on the grounds of the Museum Insel Hombroich.

Once all chalets are complete, guests will be able to book all of the units in an “eco-village” that accommodates up to 54 people.

Shutters that mimic the cedar siding can close off the expansive glazing, which encompasses 60% of the dwelling.
