The cottage is located on a site just over an hour from Gothenburg and two-and-a-half hours from Oslo, Bohuslän was the ideal location. “We immediately fell in love with the slightly hilly site and its location along a narrow dirt road with cows grazing on the other side,” says Helena. “Until then, I had never thought of building a summer house but when we got the chance, we just had to take it. Especially when my old friend Susanna said she could design a house for us.”

A woodburning stove from Cubic provides ambience and supplements heat from a furnace. “If you can get it to burn through the night without touching it, that’s a win,” Riley says. “When we’re in relatively cold places, we’re constantly using it.”

This sprawling retreat is perched high on a ridge overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and it comes with a guesthouse and an infinity pool.

The log cabins were constructed by a specialist company, and another builder helped with the interior walls. Jussi-Pekka and his father did all the other building and landscaping work, apart from the electrical and plumbing—often working 12-hour days.

Designed by Robert Harvey Oschatz, the angular residence has panoramic ocean views, tons of hosting space, and a handblown jellyfish chandelier.

Twilight

'Betasso Overlook' is aptly named for its view of Betasso Nature Preserve, 1,100 acres of single-track trails through ponderosa pine forest, granite rock outcroppings, and summertime wildflowers.
