A Ptolomeo vertical bookcase by Bruno Rainaldi stands outside the couple’s bedroom, which features a John-John bed from Poltrona Frau and Awa side tables from B&B Italia. The tatami mats are original to the house, which was designed in 2002 by architect Mikio Tai, who worked with George and Mika on updates.

The three-story structure has a pair of external staircases set between the floor-to-ceiling windows and the shutters. A Chinese lacquer chest sits at the center of the ground-floor tatami room, which is used as a tearoom, a yoga space, and a guest room. Untitled 20-10, by Julia Ritson, an Australian artist from George’s hometown, hangs in the entryway. “Her kaleidoscopic painting prepares you for the world outside,” says George.

Design-build firm Spot Lab kitted out the entry with built-in cabinetry, seating, and pegboard hangers.

The multifunctional organizer at the entry includes an umbrella stand, a shoe rack, and an adjustable pegboard that serves as a wine rack and hat/helmet rack.

When it rains, water spilling off the roofs creates reflecting pools.

Architect Jane Caught designed this hall stand for the entry way, using coloured steel to echo the copper tones used throughout the house.

A picture window with a deep seat provides a place to take in the sun.

More surfaces in cork—a side table, the frame for a skylight—punctuate the CLT.

A few steps up from the kitchen, on a slightly higher level, the living room is characterized by its suggestive wooden ceiling and its large windows with landscape views.

The living spaces center around the kitchen, where a custom-built island in salmon pink stands out.

The back patio and fire-pit area are central entertaining spaces. When the weather is nice, homeowner Joan and Ken wheel their dining room table outside for parties and dinners with friends. The fire pit was built using a steel cut-off from a natural gas tank.

For the living room, Dovetail’s metal shop fabricated a custom fireplace to go between the Quantum windows. The steel surround is coated in an antique black finish to complement the stained cedar wall.

At night, LED lights accentuate the porthole windows and openings throughout the dome.

The house is perched in the midst of an astonishing landscape. The rocky islands here were violently scraped clean by glaciers more than ten thousand years ago.

The kitchen reveals the detailed precision with which the Thoms assembled their home: Exact cuts, joins, and cantilevers bring the whole house together.

Davor (with his wife, Abbe, and son, August) designed the main living and dining pavilion as a double-height space to increase its perceived volume, and added high cubbies for extra storage.

The rusting steel is an important part of the house’s patina, Campbell says. “We appreciate materials in the raw,” he adds. “The tables aren’t stained; the steel isn’t painted. The materials are what they are.”
