The lakeside Washington residence was the first project Hale and the SHED team used shou sugi ban on. “We were somewhat doubtful about how different it would be from black stained cedar,” he recalls. “From the moment the shou sugi ban was installed, it was evident that the siding was very different in appearance and effect.”

The slats of solid wood that line the cabin's floors are made from offcuts provided by BOEN: a Norwegian flooring manufacturer. Offcuts were also used to make the 25x25 bookcase that separates the bedroom from the lounge area, the upholstery lining the dining bench, and the bathroom's stonework.

This thatch-roofed brick cottage in Nieby, Germany, was originally built by tenant farmers or crofters from a nearby estate in the late 1800s. It stands on a small triangular plot of land surrounded by barley fields and faces toward the Geltinger Birk nature reserve. The home’s street-facing facade was preserved and restored with only a minimal, black-steel dormer window belying the more substantial alterations which open onto the private rear yard. A subtle black-framed addition containing an oak-lined living space is tucked under the thatched roof and opens onto a sunken timber terrace while large picture windows are cut into the historic brick volume in areas which had been damaged from the previous additions.

A second green roof is planted with sedum and plays host to one of the family’s favorite spots: a hammock. Bentheim suggested adding a trellis overhead to soften and balance the appearance of the facade.
