Under the extension of the A-frame is the dining area and a large sofa for gathering. According to Pablo, the family gathers there in all weather. "Listening to the rain on the roof and in the trees is a wonderful experience," he notes.

The marble herringbone floor tile is from Lowe’s, and the walls are covered in waterproof concrete plaster, a finish that took up less room than tile would have. “The walls were really un-level and it's not a particularly big bathroom, so I didn't want to reduce the size of it,” says Segulja.

Blue hues continue into the bathroom. The elegant, oversized sink is controlled via the black faucet handle carved into the stone wall.

The adjacent bathroom was plastered to maintain the minimalist palette, and provide soothing contrast with the wood detailing everywhere else.

The bathroom features terrazzo floor tiles—which have a similar pattern to the material used to construct the fireplace in the living room.

Cable Railing

The main staircase consists of simple oak treads that cantilever out from side walls sheathed in natural vertical board and are supported on the other side by a continuous grill-like railing truss.

The rooftop reflecting pool was incorporated in the design of VDL II as an homage to the Silver Lake reservoir after a portion of it was infilled in the 1950s. The incorporation of water creates both visual and environmental effects, such as reflections and evaporative cooling, and connects the house with the immediate context of the reservoir. At the core of Neutra’s design philosophy is a term which the architect coined as “biorealism”—the inseparable relationship between humans and nature.
