The main house consists of two “branches” stacked at a right angle.

The best-known furnishings made by Sticotti’s studio are bookshelves suspended from a wooden rail. They appear in the second-floor living room.

Sticotti and his eponymous studio produced the majority of the furnishings in the house—as well as architectural elements like the steel staircase with wooden treads. The kitchen opens to a garden where Sticotti keeps his woodworking tools.

Buenos Aires–based architect and furniture designer Alejandro Sticotti combined clean lines and a handmade aesthetic at his beach house in Uruguay. The home is made up of two stacked boxes built from steel and board-formed concrete and wrapped in glass and tropical hardwood. Surrounded by a fence in the coastal town of La Pedrera, it is a sanctuary within a sanctuary.

Cost, indecision, and the scale of the project, which included the original 4,000-square-foot home and a sizable addition, all slowed the pace, but so did the couple’s desire to honor the intent of the original architect, Charles P. Winter, who designed the house in 1972. “It made me think about every move we made,” says Rick.

In the living room, soft-hued seating arranged in a circle is perfect for entertaining. On the far wall, Sunrise Over the Hudson, by Erik Koeppel, competes with the stunning scenery outside. “Charlie was interested in skewered views, like looking straight up at the sky and then out to the woods,” says Rick.

While on a walk through a nearby town, Eva saw an old door that caught her eye, knocked on it, and offered to buy it. Now it’s in her home.

Behind Eva is one of her canvases. Vintage Moroccan rugs are strewn on the floor of the second story.

In the sculpture studio on the top floor, Eva turned an existing opening into a decorative nook. The fabrics on the bench are antique nets used for olive picking. “They have all these olive stains that are gorgeous—they are like pieces of art,” she says.

The rugs in the living room and hallway were selected by Aamer in Pakistan and custom overdyed.

Velux skylights open the home's interior to natural light, and the couple cut a hole in the second level so that the sun's rays could reach all the way through the home.
