“The project was always concerned with the question: How do you create a living space for different tenants to come together?"
The staircase that accesses the second level features a slim silhouette that preserves ground space for the open-plan first level, where the kitchen, dining, and living areas are located.
Each inch is accounted for in the 1,916-square-foot home. Cabinets and clever storage for wine are tucked under the stairs.
“Making the stairs and the kitchen the same color was a challenge, as they are made from different materials by separate manufacturers,” says Guerrera. The kitchen counters and backsplash are laminates from Fenix, and the stairs are painted to match.

The couple packed storage around the stairs, with cabinets underneath and shelves lining the tread.
Despite its small size, the home features a surprising amount of storage space throughout, including the staircase that leads up to the bedroom.
Cabinets beneath the stairs provide additional storage for the third bedroom.
The stairs lead to a sleeping loft outfitted with a mechanical skylight.
Pozner credits Borowski with the idea to use a roller shade, purchased at the Shade Store, to close off the sleeping loft. The simple intervention, neither sound- nor lightproof, is sufficient to demarcate one “room” from another.
