Barcelona architecture practice Lacol designed the co-op with attention to reducing energy costs. Instead of individual heating and air-conditioning systems, temperatures in the apartments and indoor common spaces are controlled via a radiant system.

The kitchen, designed by Space Theory, features a refrigerator from Smeg. Everything is solar powered, and—thanks to a rainwater catchment system, a well, and a composting toilet—the home is completely off-grid.

The TV does not dominate the living room space. Instead, it is hidden behind a red glass screen and there is also a pull-down projector screen for family movie nights.

A curved sofa by Brazilian designers Danilo Lopes and Paula Gontijo is paired with an armchair by Roberta Banqueri, and a yellow-painted Tajá chair by Sergio Rodrigues.

A new transom window and sliding glass doors to the back patio add plenty of sunlight to the bedroom.

Jennifer and Kenard Bunkley braved resident wildlife and the soaring cost of plywood as they demolished and rbuilt their vacation home in upstate New York.

A partial-height carrel conceals Kurtzman's work station in the primary bedroom, with additional storage situated behind the desk that was designed in collaboration with and built by Andrew Hussey. The weaving draped over the front is by Sidney Brower, Gideon's father. Paintings on display throughout the home are by his mother, Cynthia Brower.

This feature visually separates work and life within the confines of the condo's square footage, since the computer is not visible from the bed, and vice versa.

Kurtzman and Brower turned the transitional stair landing area into a now-loved library alcove and reading nook.

Space under the stairs is useful as storage (and an enticing spot for the couple's daughter and dog).
