When embarking on the project, Juan and Cuqui agreed that they weren’t going to move or cut back the tree that Juan remembers growing up with, which has stood by their building for almost 30 years. They wanted the tree to witness Morena’s childhood, and it has become the star of the interior garden.

Cuqui and Juan left wood finishes in their natural colors, like those on the plywood cabinetry and the pine ceiling structure.

In the bathroom, a thin pane of glass separates the shower; an Aquaplane sink by Lacava hovers above a built-in vanity illuminated by a lean Adelphi light by Oxygen Lighting; and blue-green glass penny tiles by Terra Verre decorate the floor. The absence of a door, combined with windows on two sides, makes the bathroom feel like a continuation of the overall space.

Techo-Bloc’s Ocean Grande in Beige Cream and the smaller, rough-hewn Valet pavers in Onyx Black have been used to create a visually exciting layout with charcoal grout to emphasize the basket-weave pattern. “Stunning textures are revealed under different angles of the sun,” says Ciccarello.

The couple’s bathroom features a mineral composite tub from MTI.

The oak island and cupboards offset the kitchen’s black IKEA cabinetry.

Tall trees encompass the multi-story home, enhancing its remote setting. In addition to a wide driveway, the property also offers a covered carport.

The woodburning sauna stove is made by a Finnish company, IKI.

The large backyard space extends the home’s 1,378 square foot interior, with a Milgard bifold door creating fluidity between indoors and out.

A splash of dark green paint in the sleeping nook introduces an old world drama to the space. The paint color is Billiard Green from Sherwin Williams. The crochet pendant is from World Market, and the brass bull was an eBay find. The couple's dog Waylon lounges in the pull-out dog bed drawer.
