The custom kitchen millwork was fabricated by Brooklyn-based Robert Russell Design. Caesarstone, concrete, and marble comprise the backsplash and counter surfaces.

A pocket door may be closed to distinguish the living/dining area from the adjacent corridor and eat-in kitchen, and to separate the home’s climate zones.

In the kitchen, the countertops are Absolute Black wire-brushed granite from Walker Zanger, the cooktop and hoods are from Viking, the dishwashers are Miele, and the serious coffee setup (Mel is the former CEO of The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf) includes an espresso machine from La Marzocco and grinders by Mazzer. Bradley designed the cherrywood veneer cabinetry, which was made and installed by Marmol Radziner, with a custom piece by Alaco Ladder Company.

Homeowners Mark and Tamara revel in the newfound connectivity that the remodel has enabled. “We can sit at the breakfast nook at one end of the house, sipping coffee, and look all the way down to the other end of the house, where the kids’ bedrooms are,” says Tamara.

Downstairs, the open-plan living and dining space features expansive openings that open out to the balconies, patio, and the integrated gardens. This abundance of green space connects the home to the framed views of the verdant escarpment.

This renovated 19th-century Harlem brownstone is teeming with organic materials and textures, including reclaimed wood beams and boards, stone floors, and Moroccan tile. In the kitchen, antique hand-hewn beams sit overhead, mirrored by reclaimed heart pine flooring. Adding to the charm are exposed brick and a restored antique Biedermeier bench that was custom fit as a banquette.
