We felt more freedom then to make the kitchen fit but do it the way we needed to do it with a lot of comfort.

The prefabricated cabin consists of four modules connected by covered walkways. Each module has a dedicated purpose: living, sleeping/studying, energy, and outdoor dining. Connected to the sleep/study space, the energy module has a greenhouse and rainwater collection system.

Vertically installed petal-pink tile by Heath Ceramics softens the space. A sculptural Hollis + Morris fixture floats overhead.

In Brooklyn, a couple tap architect Sarah Jacoby to give their townhome a vibrant, family-friendly update.

Sugarhouse specified an interior window with fluted glass, atop custom oak cabinetry. The wall light is by Tracy Glover Studio.

Sugarhouse designed custom storage for many corners of the apartment, including this area that serves a lot of functions: extra pantry and tool storage, serving bar, desk, and even a couple junk drawers. It's painted Barren Plain by Benjamin Moore.

The heart of the home is a spacious kitchen, built under the existing bovedilla ceiling, a method of construction that was popular in the region in the early 20th century, with rows of shallow brick walls set between exposed steel beams.

Timber joinery defines the new living area, which sits just off the home’s entrance.

With no major structural work to do, the design team focused on things like color, and on the exterior they paired Benjamin Moore’s Cabbage Patch green with a front door painted in the company’s Tawny Day Lily. “Kim had a lot of really great people on the project,” Bestor explains, “and that made it possible to go super fast and still be design-y and not just do a white box.”

Now the ceiling framework gives the room more height, and two taller window units flank either side of the bed, adding to the illusion of more height. Pendants by Poul Henningsen for Louis Poulsen hang above the custom white oak bed designed by Lake Flato Architects.
