Tile by Zia Tile runs along a wall of the upstairs bathroom. The cabinets are by Cabinets quick, and the floor tile is by Concrete Collaborative.

In Portland, Oregon, a culinary couple called on architect Michael Howells to raise the roof, revamp the floor plan, and spice up the kitchen.

A splash of dark green paint in the sleeping nook introduces an old world drama to the space. The paint color is Billiard Green from Sherwin Williams. The crochet pendant is from World Market, and the brass bull was an eBay find. The couple's dog Waylon lounges in the pull-out dog bed drawer.

Backdrop’s After Hours, a soft charcoal hue, gives Carlos Naude and Whitney Brown’s home in Woodland Hills, California, sleek curb appeal. Lund Sconces by Kuzco Lighting punctuate the exterior, and the streamlined garage doors are by Amarr.

Sliding barn doors connect the garage to a shaded outdoor sculptural studio that doubles as a stage for summer concerts.

The darker gray garage door offers a chromatic and textural contrast to the concrete shell.

At a home designed by Escher GuneWardena Architecture in Los Angeles, California, the two-door garage has minimally-detailed doors in a darker color that slide horizontally, instead of rolling up or hinging inward.

The bathrooms were modeled after Japanese ryokans. Here in the main bathroom, muted Fireclay tiles clad the shower, which features a built-in bench and Purist fixtures from Kohler.

The Samurai chair by Norr11 occupies a corner of the main bedroom. From here, you can spy the medicine cabinet, faucet, and toilet by Kohler—playfully accented by a terrazzo countertop from Concrete Collaborative and a Concretti sink.

To maximize the views and the indoor/outdoor flow, they replaced the windows and patio doors with Western Window Systems, which immediately transformed the home.

At the ranch of Nancy and Tony Lilly in the hills of Sonoma, an area plagued by drought and fires, landscape designer John Greenlee struck a balance between beauty and resiliency with a water-wise meadow-garden.

The millwork hides the bed and desk, but it also conceals the air conditioner. “Everything is integrated,” says Losada-Amor. “That’s what keeps it clean.” Even the garage door mechanism is hidden here.

A patio connects the family’s trio of My Cabins.

It took a total of 24 days to install the unit. “We prefabricated the framing, the insulation, and the waterproof sheeting, which are all panelized so all that the contractors had to assemble was the interior finish and the exterior siding,” says Lee.

In addition to the towering tree in the front, mature landscaping borders the three remaining sides, enhancing the property's overall sense of privacy.

The room is painted Farrow & Ball ‘Stiffkey Blue’ and outfitted with a custom desk.

The team painted the exterior brick after patching it in places, like the section left by the removal of the door. “We could find the exact texture of brick, that classic Roman running bond, but we could not find it in the right color,” says architect Kailin Gregga. Painting the entire exterior unifies the façade. Rich Brilliant Willing “Hoist” sconces in Black was also added.

Large windows and sliding glass doors were placed in key spots in the new layout, with the rolling doors reinstalled to act as large “shutters,” says architect Doug Huntington.
