Makai’s structural steel components were designed by Mark Donofrio and affixed to the lava at four points. The kitchen contains a Kohler sink and pot racks from IKEA. "Because of the angle of the lava, it’s asymmetrical," says architect Erin Moore.

The Impluvium Refuge is set in a dense, tall Chilean forest within the Huilo-Huilo Biological Reserve.

At the head of the bed in the main bedroom, a half-height wall overlooks the dining space below.

The wood exterior blends in quietly with the surrounding timber.

Douglas Fir floor boards are laid in a hexagonal pattern on the interior of the studio, where clay plaster walls lend warmth and texture. Skylights flood the space with plenty of sunlight.

The owner and architect chose to outfit almost every aspect of the studio in Douglas fir plywood.

The mix of plywood helped save on costs, adds visual interest to the space, and serves as an example for Tim’s clients.

As the facade of a Bates Masi-designed home in Water Mill, New York, rises from eight to 14 feet high, the mahogany planks subtly widen. “It was quite a demand to make of the contractor,” architect Paul Masi says. “But the design was so much about traveling through the site and weaving [the house] together with the deck.”

The piston-operated pine sunshades lift upwards to protect the exterior deck and give residents the ability to manually modulate the home’s access to daylight and shade as the sun moves across the sky.

The 753-square-foot retreat has two bedrooms and a bath, and takes advantage of its rocky site.
