Upcountry Maui Cottage and Barn: lanai

The lanai and the private pool.

Architect Craig Steely designed this house for himself, his wife Cathy Liu, a painter, and their son, Zane, that looks out to the Pacific Ocean from a lava flow on the big island of Hawaii.

For the landscape and redesigned pool area, Terremoto kept “their movies simple and elemental,” matching the subtractive approach taken in the house. The firm collaborated with Farnham on the design of the long-span pergola, which is cleverly engineered to only need four support posts.

Breaking up the concrete form is a pergola-like resting area. Wood-clad walls on either side read as columns supporting an architrave.

From the driveway, stepping stones lead across a wading pool to the home's main entrance. An island patio rests as a centerpiece beneath the pergola.

This project by Studio Saxe elegantly combines modern methods of construction with local materials and techniques. Villa Saxo is defined by an exoskeleton pergola structure that provides shade over large terraced areas while also creating a frame for the local flora to grow around.

Dining Poolside

A pergola and terrace extend naturally from the main house, designed by architect Bernard Perreault. The residents use the ample outdoor space for dining and relaxing with their children. Back-to-back banquettes anchor the area. The pendants are from Homier Luminaire.
