Ben made the black laminate top for the metal table base, and Emily bought the vintage chairs in a Target parking lot after spotting them in the back of someone’s truck and asking if they were for sale. The pendant is Schoolhouse Electric, and the large painting is also by Emily.

Ben fashioned the stove-side cabinet as a freestanding unit. This area functions as the couple’s main prep space, and a deep drawer below holds bigger appliances like the food processor and a stock pot. The custom pot rack is by Kari Merkl of the local design and manufacturing company Merkled Studio.

A black, 18-inch Bosch dishwasher and black hardware from Schoolhouse Electric disappear against the cabinet fronts, rather than cluttering the small room with distracting detail.

The counters are 12-millimeter solid surface, the LG High Max, sourced at Home Depot.

The kitchen’s original galley layout was retained, and the walls and utilities were kept in place.

A new wood-panel wall is a focal point in the open layout. The original white oak floors were also refinished.

The carport stands apart from the home and is topped with Solar World’s Sun Module photovoltaic panels. McAdam and Smith have grown quite used to their small electric bills.

The overall home is constructed with larch timber, a British wood, and features a central ridge beam that gives it a butterfly-shaped roof. Shou sugi ban was done on the wood to give it a charred finish.

Flora is a new Techo-Bloc product created with a new manufacturing technique that gives concrete the appearance of European ceramics with the same durability and freeze-thaw attributes of all Techo-Bloc pavers and patio slabs—and it can be laid in over 460 different pattern combinations. “Flora is getting a lot of attention from the landscape design community,” says Ciccarello. “We forecast it to be a very hot product this year.” Here, the Techo-Bloc Industria Flora slab in Greyed Nickel is set against a border of the Squadra paver in Onyx Black. A Lumi fire bowl adds visual impact, and makes the space suitable for use year-round.

All raw materials are sourced locally to reduce the overall carbon footprint - as well as eliminate additional costs on the client.
