Built in 1937, Taliesin West was an experiment in desert living that evolved at the hands of master architect Frank Lloyd Wright and his apprentices until he passed in 1959. Conceptualized as a refuge from the harsh winters of the Midwest, the complex—which grew to include a drafting studio, dining facilities, three theaters, a workshop, Wright’s office and private living quarters, and apprentice and staff residences—takes direct inspiration from the arid landscape.

The home has a mansard roof with shakes and real hardwood tongue and groove siding. “I liked the idea of making this ugly duckling into something with character versus landing a modern spaceship house in an old neighborhood dominated by vinyl homes,” architect/homeowner Caleb Johnson says.

The coffee table is a keepsake from Beaulieu’s grandparents, made of monkeypod wood and bought in Hawaii in the 1960s. The couple flanked it with a Design Within Reach Raleigh Sofa and Eames Molded Plywood Lounge Chair. A Nelson Pear Lotus Floor Lamp and Rattan Ottoman from Franco Alibini finishes the room.
