After looking at dozens of disappointing newer homes, designers Junko Uchiyama and Christopher Flechtner (here with son Nikki) decided to renovate a century-old machiya, or townhouse, in a historic section of Kyoto. Putting a playful spin on its classic style was an essential part of their vision.

The team covered the brick with natural slate exterior cladding called Cupaclad, then added a charcoal-painted vertical siding to the upper portion. A landscape architect changed the exterior entry sequence so it meets the sidewalk, lining the new path with Corten garden beds.

“We wanted to use natural materials in a neutral color palette,” Dino says of the sleek kitchen. “Adding the Smeg range lends that European element we were going for.” White oak cabinetry and a brushed, soft gray limestone create more layers of texture.

Completing the kitchen is a Litze faucet by Brizo and a Crosstown sink by Elkay, along with rangetop and wall ovens by Dacor and a Benchmark refrigerator from Bosch.
