Lisa added a window above the sink, and moved the sink from the island, so that Brendan could watch his kids play as he cooked.

A skylight was added to bring in more light, and the existing ceilings painted Benjamin Moore ‘Black Tar’ for contrast. The island pendant is the Schoolhouse Ray 17” Pendant and the stools are the Artek Aalto High Chair K65.

The architects reused much of the existing walnut cabinetry, giving it an ebonized finish for contrast.

The first-floor bathroom is clad in Custard color Arto tiles from local maker Tempest Tile. Each bathroom features a hue that nods to the home’s '70s roots while echoing the natural beauty outside, from the first floor’s ochre tones to the second floor’s green and the third floor’s blue.

Large sliding glass doors access the covered deck, where guests can barbeque. The lights run on solar-power. “The lighting at night is warm,” says St-Laurent. “It's really nice because when you're in the forest and the atmosphere is blue because of the water, then the cabin is like a lantern.”

Black-framed, custom windows by Euro Vinyl are chic frames to the outdoors.

A General Electric stereo cabinet and a 1950s chair are among the vintage pieces in the living room.

Looking from the dining area, wood cladding extends from the entryway ceiling up to railings in a second floor loft.

Inside, rustic elements (like wood beams and whitewashed wood) nod to the structure’s former life, while walls of glass, black metal accents, and sleek furnishings give it a fresh, new look. After the renovation, the couple loved the guesthouse so much they decided to make it their full-time dwelling.

The wall between the dining room and kitchen was opened up to increase the flow and make room for an extra-long island that totals fifty linear feet of counterspace. At the center of the plan is the slatted woodwork that covers a core for the kitchen storage, a bathroom, and a laundry room. “That became a wonderful opportunity for a beautiful wood feature,” says Maziarski.

The exposed rafters were carried into the exterior areas, including the covered patio.

The inoperable picture windows were replaced with large sliding glass doors that open to the new seating patio.

The entire home is wrapped in pine tongue-and-groove, which matches the original finish on the ceiling.

The primary bathroom hosts a double vanity with a long horizontal mirror, and a walk-in shower.

Part of the homes midcentury charm, a landline phone with rotary dial rests on the kitchen wall. The kitchen is lit by pendant and recessed lighting.
