California pepper trees, grasses, and sage are low-maintenance, low-water plants that also are low-allergen.

The main bathroom features a soaking tub, Hansgrohe faucets, and bathroom tiles from Heath Ceramics and American Universal Penny.

The purple flowers of sage and succulents are part of a landscape that reflects seasonal changes. Blu Dot Hot Mesh Lounge Chairs are on the main bedroom deck.

Viewed from the entrance, the kitchen is a streamlined composition thanks to sleek concrete countertops by Caesarstone and Basis cabinet fronts by Reform. There’s a contemporary induction cooktop, fridge, and wall oven by Dacor. Viso counter stools by Muuto pull up to the island, embellished by a Linear pendant light by Kuzco above.

Rodney from RF Design, which specializes in IKEA kitchens, helped the couple create elevations that allowed them to spec out appliances, countertops, and fixtures. They tired a few different options before landing on the final design, which privileges low, wide, deep drawers.

Outside the main room, a low-lying lounge and more firewood storage. “People will just come and stay, and besides grocery shopping, they don't really leave because you have everything you need here,” says Kai. “It's a great place to vacation with a family and anyone you want to reconnect with.”
