The homeowners, Claudine and Isaiah, have been living in Seattle for three and a half years, and they moved into their new home this fall. “We were looking for a modern look and feel, with unique characteristics at an affordable price point,” says Isaiah. “A lot of new construction and updated homes are either very similar and cookie cutter, or unaffordable.”

The Jasper Sofa from Interior Define and a handmade wool rug from Dyphor is mixed with several vintage discoveries, including a 1960s pendant from 1st Dibs and an antique Rococo mirror that’s a family heirloom.

Quartzite kitchen island countertops and a wall of off-white ceramic tile between the doorways complement the space's walnut cabinetry and brass surfaces.

The pegs in the master bedroom can be rearranged to alter the layout of shelves, allowing flexible storage options.

The previous owners had created the duplex by linking two apartments with a spiral staircase. A pendant lamp by Muuto now overlooks the staircase, which has been reinvigorated with a new birch plywood surround. The material is a unifying motif: The shelves and cabinets designed by Delaunay, including those in the kitchen, are made of it.

The sofa in the living room features bright yellow Kvadrat upholstery and patterned cushions made from textiles collected by Marianne. It is part of a unit that functions to divide the space, conceal the fold-away bed, and provide extra storage.

The house was opened up as much as the budget allowed, with oversized windows and patio doors leading to a terraced deck with a series of seating areas cascading down to the landscaped path.

Steel beams, painted black, support the timber slab floor and roof. "Leaving flat planes of dowel laminated timber and C-shaped steel supports exposed is an honest way of expressing the architectural structure," Hunter says.

The roof deck, anchored by a gas fire pit from Paloform, boasts an incredible view of the water.

Now, an eight-foot sliding door brings light into the kitchen and enables fluid movement between inside and out. The wider steps can serve as seats during a party, and they make for a graceful transition to the yard.

The couple is eager to host a party with Diego’s band after the pandemic to take full advantage of the new deck and its amphitheater-like seating.
