"The home noses out of the forest just a little bit, like it’s peeking out of the trees,” says architect Ray Calabro.

Light streams through the screened facade of the porch creating a beautiful pattern of light and shadow. On warm days, the porch can be opened up to the deck outside.

The Real Cedar cladding is arranged both horizontally and vertically, adding visual interest to the simple, archetypal built forms and showcasing the striking graphic effect that can be achieved with the material.

The entire property took about a year to complete, given that this was once nothing but forest. The company can complete construction of the cabins in two to three months.

The blackened timber cladding helps the prefab to blend into the forest. The interior of the home was conceived as two blocks that house less flexible spaces like the bathroom, kitchen, and storage. This approach helped to avoid the use of interior walls, “freeing up the rest of the spaces to connect with the setting,” explains iHouse. “The forest is framed at all times.”

The new building has slightly less square footage and is nested within the same area as the original foundation.

“We always had it in the back of our minds to do something like this,” says Jeff. “At some point we wanted to build a house that totally represented our values.”
