The light timber of the interventions have a delicacy that emphasize the grandness of the original structure and mesh with the homeowners’ environmental philosophy. “We fell in love with the raw nature of the original structure, its heaviness and many imperfections,” says David McGahon of Studio McW, “all of which tell the story of its industrial history. We all agreed that a light touch approach should be taken.”

“It’s very similar to what you’d see for corn storage,” the homeowner says of the custom designed stairwell screen. On the landing, a long vertical window frames a picturesque view of the property. As a passageway that you would typically walk through quickly, the design details in the stairwell create an experience where you instead stop and linger.

The cut-out in the oak cabinetry denotes a sleeping nook for the couple’s cat Mitten.

The pair also designed the upstairs bathroom’s eye-catching geometric vanity, which pairs elm with a quartzite countertop.

The home's centerpiece is its ridge-beam skylight, which extends over the living room and expanded kitchen.

The expansive windows offer unparalleled views of La Plata peak while also providing lots of natural light to the living room and kitchen.

Completed in 2018 on a 2.6-acre site in the San Juan Islands, the two-bedroom modular home was installed in a day.
