The lower sunroom off the kitchen can be used during San Francisco's rainier days, and be opened on sunnier ones. The owners decided to add the disappearing doors during the pandemic, so they could still entertain safely.

The house is arranged in a modified L-shape, with shared public spaces in the east wing (at left), the master bedroom at the western corner, and a four-bedroom residential wing (right) facing north.

In the family bathroom, an existing brick wall has been rendered with clay, creating a neutral backdrop for the stone countertops, timber joinery, and terracotta floor tiles.

The bunk beds were made to be as wide as possible. Hollenbeck has three kids and two dogs.

A downstairs home gym includes a climbing wall.

Two built-in desks are a spot for kids to do homework.

One corner of the Think Room can be opened to connect it to the entry, living, and dining room.

By wedging the house into the hill, Herrmann was able to accommodate the owners’ desire to present a low-key face to the neighbors. Living room sliders open onto a concrete terrace that leads down to the backyard.

The living room features an Isamu Noguchi Freeform sofa, a brassy Slit Table XL from Hay, and a square silver coffee table from FOUND home by Ruth Davis. The artwork is by Carlos Cruz Diez.

Hixton's over-arching goal for the kitchen was function. "I said repeatedly that function trumps aesthetics, but in the end, I don't think aesthetics was ever sacrificed," she shares. To plan for this, Dyer asked to see how Hixton stored food and created a bespoke cabinet specifically to house her stored bulk food. "The height on each drawer is specific to the height of a jar, pint, quart, half-gallon. It's amazing how much food it stores in such a small space," says Hixton.

The pool and covered patio sit on the corner opposite of the entrance courtyard. The patio can be accessed through sliding glass doors from both the dining room and kitchen, and the master bedroom. Having lived on the site for so long, designer Jamie Chioco was able to quickly make informed decisions about the design—for example, one of the neighbors uses his backyard for large family gatherings and barbecues, and so it was decided early on to not to have many openings on that facade in order to give both homes privacy.

The guest bathroom features bright turquoise Arcilla Field tiles by Ann Sacks and brass fixtures and fittings that will develop a patina over time. A skylight above the shower provides natural light and brightens the room.
