In the master bathroom, Nero Marquina marble floors by Ann Sacks surround an elegant Hastings soaking tub. Duravit sinks, Kallista faucets, Ann Sacks wall tile, and custom walnut cabinetry complete the space.

Protected by an overhang, and floating above ground level, this tertiary space is known in traditional homes as the "engawa." To sustain a unified look throughout, the floor and ceiling are clad in ipe wood.

At the opposite end of the house, the soaking tub gets almost daily use. The bath and shower fixtures are by Dornbracht

The Duravit tub in the master bathroom is another favorite spot for keeping warm; it offers a slender view out toward the trees.

A family’s getaway in the California desert includes a spa-like main bath with a large soaking tub that connects to an outdoor shower.

Architect Sean Lockyer designed a 5,760-square-foot concrete, stucco, and ipe home for a couple and their three children in the Southern California desert town of Indian Wells. The residents selected the home’s furnishings, including the Royal Botania chaise lounges.

Lockyer added native desert plants to a courtyard near the garage.

Custom walnut and stainless steel sheathes the kitchen, which is open to the living-dining area and the patio. The Twiggy lamp is by Foscarini; the sliding doors are from Fleetwood.

Ipe paneling and concrete floors continue into the living area, where a photograph by Scott McFarland hangs above the fireplace. Surrounding the dining table, by Riva 1920, are walnut chairs the couple found locally.

In the lounge, a sofa from Flexform joins a rug and poufs from Gandia Blasco. “We used boulders found onsite in the walls and windows as a way to reinforce the home’s connection with the desert environment,” Lockyer explains. As throughout, the wall and ceiling are painted with Cool December from Dunn-Edwards.

Windows are scattered throughout the house in order to let in natural light wherever possible, while custom furniture with clean, minimal lines contributes to the natural palette.

In the master bath, a custom raised Silestone sink is surrounded by a teak countertop and Porcelanosa glass tiles. Teak slats anchor the glass-enclosed shower.

In the kitchen, designers Christina Valencia and Kele Dobrinski of Colossus Mfg. created a 14-foot island with a waterfall edge made of platinum-gray quartzite.

The island helps to define and separate the open-plan kitchen, dining, and living areas.

The walnut-wrapped range hood and adjacent walnut shelving contrast with the lower white oak cabinetry, offering a mix of textures that lends interest. The backsplash and the counters are Calacatta Miraggio quartz.

Dobrinski designed and crafted an industrial-style light fixture to suspend above the quartzite island. The fixture is 12 feet long and features wood doweling, copper fittings, and loosely strung pendants. The leather-upholstered bar chairs that pull up to the island are from West Elm.

The kitchen island looks to the dining area, the wet bar, and the living room.
