Protected by an overhang, and floating above ground level, this tertiary space is known in traditional homes as the "engawa." To sustain a unified look throughout, the floor and ceiling are clad in ipe wood.

Architect Sean Lockyer designed a 5,760-square-foot concrete, stucco, and ipe home for a couple and their three children in the Southern California desert town of Indian Wells. The residents selected the home’s furnishings, including the Royal Botania chaise lounges.

In the lounge, a sofa from Flexform joins a rug and poufs from Gandia Blasco. “We used boulders found onsite in the walls and windows as a way to reinforce the home’s connection with the desert environment,” Lockyer explains. As throughout, the wall and ceiling are painted with Cool December from Dunn-Edwards.

Dobrinski designed and crafted an industrial-style light fixture to suspend above the quartzite island. The fixture is 12 feet long and features wood doweling, copper fittings, and loosely strung pendants. The leather-upholstered bar chairs that pull up to the island are from West Elm.
