A screened in porch with full-height openings projects into the surrounding landscape. The light wood floors contrast with the dark stained walls and ceiling.
Sævik compares her house to a contemplative hideout. “It’s very quiet,” she says. “You can concentrate and let thoughts fly.” Her favorite summer pastimes include reading, painting, drawing, yoga, and “just sitting and feeling the forest,” she says.
“Friends can use the screened porch for the day, like a cabana,” the wife says. The couple are also planning for teachers from High Meadow Farm to hold practices here. “People will be able to use the porch and have access to the lake while our family is also using the house,” the husband adds.
Leading from the communal pool area to the more intimate olive tree grove, the intricate “woven” ipe boardwalk plays with a variety of lineweights and patterns. All of the wood used for the project is reclaimed.
The home has a series of ramps and decks that were built to safely break apart if a major storm occurs. Exterior doors are by Weather Shield Windows & Doors, with handles by Baldwin Hardware.
