The elevator entrance opens to the kitchen and dining area, which is the social heart of the home. A line of statement halogen lights hang from the ceiling above the dining bench, which is clad in timber boards reclaimed from the original floor.

The team covered the brick with natural slate exterior cladding called Cupaclad, then added a charcoal-painted vertical siding to the upper portion. A landscape architect changed the exterior entry sequence so it meets the sidewalk, lining the new path with Corten garden beds.

The structure is made of double-brick walls with insulation between each layer, which regulates indoor temperatures while still providing strong protection from the elements.

“Watching the sunrise and moonrise from the living room is gobsmacking,” says James.

The exterior is still clad in timber like the original, but Jo took the palette darker and selected wider planks to modernize the look. “We kept the rhythm, but changed it slightly,” she says.
