An assortment of dining chairs, including vintage iterations on the Eames shell chair by Charles and Ray Eames and Stokke's Tripp Trapp chair, are clustered around a table lit by a pendant lamp by Coco Flip Design Studio.

Wardle’s firm also designed the dining table, where up to ten guests can gaze out at the Southern Ocean. The solid-oak Hiroshima chairs are designed by Maruni.

Sullivan, a contractor, owns the remodeling company Impact Construction. He designed and performed the work in several stages, with collaboration from friends Kevin Nigri, AIA, and Stephen Strasser. The dining table, the Parsons model from Room & Board with a walnut top, is surrounded by Adelaide chairs from BoConcept. The Random pendant light is by Moooi.

In the dining area, a one-of-a-kind table with a reclaimed Carrara marble top by NET—themultidisciplinary design firm of architect Alejandro Sticotti, with whom Nicolas works—is surrounded by prototypes of the company’s Board chair. The family dog, China, sits on a floor made of travertine tiles.

Kitchen

The half-wall that divides the living room and dining room is walnut, and was a clever way to separate the living and dining zones, and wrap the structural posts, which were painted a dark grey. There’s a television lift inside the cabinet that allows the TV to be stowed when not in use. The couch is from Design Within Reach, and the flooring throughout is white oak.

The inoperable picture windows were replaced with large sliding glass doors that open to the new seating patio.

Now, there are sightlines from the entry to the backyard. The dining table, surrounded by Wegner Wishbone chairs, is by Campagna, a Portland-based design studio.

Downstairs, the framework of battens were skimmed with drywall to quiet down the look. “It was busy and hard on the eye, and we couldn’t put pictures on the wall,” says Jo.

Raised cabinetry on one side of the dining room makes it harder to see the kitchen’s mess. The designers also inserted a mirror panel adjacent to the windows.

Colossus Mfg. outfitted the dining area with a round table from Burke Decor and leather-upholstered side chairs by Staffan Holm for Hem.

The Ten Table Round by Christian Troels and Jacob Pledjdrup for DK3 is from the Danish Design Store, surrounded by Bacco chairs in Nero leather and black ash. The light is the Model 2065 from astep, and the painting is by Jane Chapman.

The designers re-sized the cabinetry and extended the custom stove hood up to the high ceilings to better balance the proportions of the room. The fronts were kept deliberately minimal, with no hardware.

The materiality of the rounded dividing cabinet is echoed in the white oak joinery that wraps around the structural element to offer additional storage and display space.

Dark walnut floors are paired with vertical bleached walnut paneling.
