The upper-volume living quarters feature unparalleled views of El Paso and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, in the distance.

The dining table was designed and built by Ford using antique pine. The sculptural oak chairs are from the 1970s. They were sourced from the Netherlands with the help of local designer Hailey Kolbe.

The climate-controlled feed room doubles as a place to relax with a cup of coffee or host guests for a glass of wine. The stone sink began as a planter that Ford imported from Italy and customized to function within the space.

The bathroom is finished with a marble shower that complements the marble countertops in the kitchen.

Natural light and landscape views come most notably through the floor-to-ceiling windows in Kelli’s bedroom. However, the open layout means that they flood the entire space with light and landscape views.

For the countertops, Ford sourced distinctive Calacatta Viola marble from Italy.

Kelli sits on the plywood staircase that connects the stables to the loft. A landing halfway up provides a floor-to-ceiling view.

White oak slats and cork cladding give texture to the facade of a house that architect Jack Becker designed for himself and his wife, landscape architect Maddie Hoagland-Hanson, in an alley in the Capitol Hill area of Washington, D.C. High awning windows let daylight in while preserving privacy.

The interior is lined almost entirely in birch plywood panels.

A breezeway complete with swings connects the front and back decks. “We knew we wanted a covered entry, but we left it open to create a larger outdoor space,” says Scott, who admits to occasionally using the swings himself. Mud guards are built into the Kebony decking to keep dirt from being tracked inside. The teak chairs are by Skagerak.

“We pulled apart one volume and staggered it along the buildable area of the property,” says architect Matthew Ahlberg of Portland firm Barrett Made. The home is clad in unfinished cedar, meant to weather over time.

Family members have their own areas in the mudroom. Each is equipped with a hanging basket and a repurposed teak shower mat.

“I like the darkness of walnut. Other woods tend to yellow if you don’t stain it, while walnut stays true to itself,” Caleb says. The white glass tile backsplash melds with the wall.

“Using only wood to form a cabinet results in artistic moments. Diagonals read as decorative, but these strong triangles are necessary when you’re not using plywood,” Caleb says. “It’s pure joy to use the kitchen, knowing that all parts of it are built with meaning and without compromise.

In the first-floor bathroom, the mermaid backsplash Caleb carved plays off the Hygge & West “Mermaid” wallpaper.
