Before: The kitchen was not original, and had many problems for Margaret, who loves to cook. For example, the space allotted to the refrigerator and oven was too small, so they couldn't have the appliances they needed, and they wanted drawers instead of cabinets.

This 2,520-square-foot home in Los Angeles is a vibrant residence for a production designer and an artist.

In the back, ferns and other shade-friendly plants thrive beneath the home’s deep overhangs.

Landscape designer Bernard Trainor’s creative use of poured-in-place concrete pavers—such as off the living room, where they break up a low-maintenance lawn of June grass—give the irregularly shaped lot a sense of order. Foxtail ferns and blue chalk sticks, a succulent, lend dashes of color to the entry courtyard, while thyme makes for a fragrant accent between the pavers.

The side patio, adjacent to the kitchen, offers additional outdoor living space with casual seating and an integrated concrete bench.

The original redwood tongue-and-groove ceiling was hidden underneath coats of white paint. The design team carefully sanded and refinished the boards to restore the beautiful natural wood. They also preserved the home's original globe ceiling pendants and in-floor radiant heating system.

Klopf Architecture preserved the vertical “thinline” wood siding, and matched it in kind at the front addition.
