Built on a tight budget of $120,000, a retirement home in the mountains delivers unexpected contemporary design to a rural township.

The living room is furnished with vintage items, including a leather-and-chrome chair by Suekichi Uchida and a stacking stool by Florence Knoll.

Norman Millar and Judith Sheine designed the built-ins in the living-dining area, which were made from vertical-grain Douglas fir. Vintage Dutch industrial chairs are arranged around a black walnut dining table that, like the madrone coffee table, is by Urban Hardwoods.

The guesthouse has similar built-ins and is outfitted with a reproduction rotating sconce by Serge Mouille and rugs by Stephanie Odegard.

The total cost of the build, including all appliances, plumbing fixtures, and lighting, as well as the milling of trees that were cleared, came to $514,500.

The bathroom that survived the fire is one that interior designer Dawn Kirker helped renovate nearly a decade before. The floating walnut vanity brings warmth to the otherwise white-toned room.

The birch was custom kerfed to look like planks and finished in a white varnish. The table and peninsula were also made to fit snugly into the A-frame.

The home office's built-in desk has enough space for parents to work while the kids tackle art projects or homework without feeling too crowded.

The primary bedroom has a single-material palette: pine wood. The light tone creates a relaxing backdrop for minimal, modern furniture.

Some of the furnishings came from the homeowners’ Dallas home, including the wooden chairs they purchased 35 years ago. The sofa is the Madison Sleeper Sofa from Bo Concept, while the side table is from Target. The lamp is from CB2. A British, antique officer’s cabinet contrasts with a modern bookshelf from Crate and Barrel.

The residents went with a Control4 automation system to handle lighting, sound, and window shades; Traverse City–based Waara Technologies did the installation. Each of the two bathrooms were fully remodeled and now feature new flooring and fixtures.
