Travis Price Architects has completed a variety of residential buildings using prefabricated methods—including single-family dwellings and multifamily units. The firm prioritizes sustainable building strategies, and it’s known for incorporating shipping containers as prefabricated elements.

Minim Homes are wrapped in beautiful shiplapped cypress that will gently age to gray—and they can be outfitted with 960-watt solar systems to go entirely off grid. Production of the homes is currently on hold, but interested parties can purchase plans on Minim’s website.

Washington, DC–based Robert Gurney Architects designed this home for clients seeking a light-filled, modern residence. It’s composed of 13 modules that were built in a Virginia factory in less than two weeks.

The architect and his family lived in the home for nearly six decades.

While much of the home has been preserved, the kitchen underwent renovations to bring it up to a modern chef's standards.

The courtyard brings natural light into the lower level of the home, which has a den/media room, guest suite/workout area, and storage and mechanical.

The insides of the carcass are as beautiful as the exposed faces. “You can’t capture a piece of solid wood in a frame or it will expand, contract, and crack, so we re-assembled our leftover walnut strips to infill the framework,” Stuart says.

Local artist John Bisbee created a decorative screen out of nails for the end of the base cabinet. Stuart built the drawers using traditional wood-on-wood slides and proportionally spaced dovetails, which operate differently in summer and winter. “Those idiosyncrasies effect the way you interact with it,” Stuart notes. “The kitchen is experiential in that way.”

“I like the darkness of walnut. Other woods tend to yellow if you don’t stain it, while walnut stays true to itself,” Caleb says. The white glass tile backsplash melds with the wall.

The Luberas didn’t use a general contractor or architect, but they did enlist the counsel of legendary Detroit designer Ruth Adler Schnee, who in 1964 helped Girard plan the color scheme for a streetscape in Columbus, Indiana. Window alignments create long views through the house and atrium.

In the living room, the slanted, open-joist ceiling rises to almost 10 ½ feet. A fusuma door leads to the dining room. The torso sculptures are by Janice Trimpe.

For the landscape, Neal worked with a friend from graduate school who is based in Portland at landscape architecture firm Lookout.
