Sliding glass doors span a 16-foot opening from living room to exterior deck. The family enjoys keeping the doors open for the majority of the year, and regularly uses the space for grilling and socializing with family and friends.

The large master suite has soaring ceilings and walls of glass.

“The height of the new extension has been kept low, while still keeping all interior spaces on one level,” says the firm. “This approach led us to establish the project’s design identity in detail and materiality rather than in a ‘grand architectural gesture.’"

The outdoor dining space that extends from the living area of the primary residence is protected from mosquitoes with the use of screens in a timber frame. Large roof overhangs protect the interior from the sun.

The sea-facing side has a large covered deck. Thin slats of larch on this facade create a slimmer profile that contrasts the large floor-to-ceiling windows.

Sundberg says the owners are very proud of the house, not only for its aesthetic, but also because of "how it creates this distillation of the things they love about their place in Sweden, how wonderful it makes them feel. That sort of brings us right to the core of what we try to do always."

Full height glazing provides a direct visual connection to the exterior foliage.

Burgundy Heath tile envelops one wall in the powder room, which is part of the entry. The industrial-style polished steel sink is from Lacava and the sconce is by In Common With.

In the Oakland, California, home of Diana Blanco Taylor and Joshua Taylor, architect Sky Lanigan bumped out a garage to make a shingle-clad primary suite. An open living, dining, and kitchen area with tile accents is where, Diana says, the family spends the most time together.

The living room’s wood-burning fireplace has a concrete hearth that wraps the chimney and runs under the windows, acting as seating, a plant ledge, and creating a spot to store logs, all of which are harvested from the site.

Modern elements blend with rustic materials in the bath, including an open tile shower, marble step, and brass ceiling light from Cedar + Moss.

The bathroom is lined with on-site molded terrazzo made from white cement and bits of yellow and gray stone.
