Light pours through clerestory windows in the master bathroom. Staying true to the home’s overall aesthetic, Sweet used simple, contrasting materials—white oak for the cabinets and Ann Sacks white tiles for the walls.

Making maximum use of a tight footprint, architect Robert Sweet designed a two-story home in Hermosa Beach that provides plenty of flexible indoor/outdoor space for residents Anton and Mardi Watts and their children.

In the kitchen, a glass backsplash is one of many connections to the outdoors. The Hee barstools are by Hay and the Highline pendant light is by Rakumba Lighting Australia.

The kitchen includes under-counter cabinets from Ikea and a custom open shelving system and hood in white oak designed and built by Jai and Lindsay.

The workshop interiors emphasize function, with polished concrete slab floors and 35-foot-high ceilings to accommodate large projects and gatherings. The disco ball, set to spin via a smartphone app, can be lowered with an industrial winch and is visible from the overhead studio suite through a peek-a-boo window.

Peter Zumthor’s holiday home for Living Architecture sits at the edge of Devon, England, a small village surrounded by Monterey pines and open fields, where cattle occasionally wander by. Although the exterior is somewhat stark, there is a surprising sense of warmth and even coziness inside, amid the bare concrete walls and stone floors.

Much of the furniture in the Devon house was designed by Zumthor himself.

For the couple’s shared office, which is windowless, the team installed backlit panels to give the illusion of daylight entering the room.
