Homeowner and general contractor Clint Unander redesigned his dated Santa Barbara ranch to be a bright, airy home that combines classic California style with Scandinavian minimalism.

Although the SBL was developed in response to the Woolsey Fire and Malibu’s expedited permit process, the units also conform to ADU standards statewide and can be installed in any suitable location.

RIGI Design reshaped the form and functionality of the interior layout.

In addition to housing the garage, the ground floor features an open living room, a dining area and kitchen, a half bath, and a flush wall of cabinetry for storage.

For a minimalist balustrade, the architects installed Ronstan Carl Stahl X-Tend stainless steel mesh to separate the stairs from the kitchen.

No space goes unused in the kitchen, including the under-stair space. The perforated metal screens pull out to reveal additional storage.
