One of the first Dwell Houses, built by Abodu, was installed at Leslie Scharf’s vineyard home in Healdsburg, California. Norm Architects led the design of the 540-square-foot prefab, which is wrapped in Real Cedar siding.

That reveal is repeated between the custom perimeter cabinets and counter, the latter made of “Pearl Gray” Corian which was color-matched throughout the apartment.

The dining room and kitchen were integrated by removing a load-bearing wall that once separated the rooms. The space is now filled with natural light from the backyard.

Instead of paint, the walls are embellished with MDF to create interesting surface textures.

The concrete fireplace doubles as a source of heat and a structural element. Originally, Katz planned to plaster the fireplace with cement to create an ultra-smooth surface, but once the design team saw the initial roughness, they liked the look and decided to keep it. "It looks like a rock formation in the living room," he says.

Homeowners Toni and Graeme sit on the patio with their dog Bokkie. An exterior conversation pit is the most popular spot in the house. A gas grill and pizza oven are built into the back brick wall. The countertop to the left of the wood storage nook is made with leathered Zimbabwean Granite.

Eleven-year-old Jamie sits on the bed with family dog, Bokkie. All materials chosen for this project have a specific relationship with South Africa and its design vernacular. The cork wall is a nod to the country's indigenous cork bush.

The kitchen cabinetry is crafted from black-stained American Oak by Pro-Reno Kitchens. The dining table, chairs, and bar stools are made by local wood manufacturer Houtlander. A diamond-shaped skylight is a unique touch.
