A sauna sits right off the basement’s spa.

The basement is completely tiled in a deep navy and serves as storage space for the family’s various sports equipment—the entire room is a shower, equipped with a high-power pressure washer and a commercial grade drain.

The new bedroom is reached at the end of a new hallway, where you step through the exterior wall, leaving the existing (old) house, and onto a glass floor beneath a slot skylight between the old house and the new addition. King describes this as "an ephemeral interpretation of an Japanese engawa — no longer inside, yet not outside."

The ceiling is just cleverly-arranged particle board, but its visual impact is undeniable.

The guesthouse has similar built-ins and is outfitted with a reproduction rotating sconce by Serge Mouille and rugs by Stephanie Odegard.

Aumas outfitted a vintage steel-frame sofa by George Nelson in navy blue fabric from Kvadrat and hung one of his own photos just above it. The lamp to the left of the sofa is a 1960s design found at a Lisbon flea market, and to the right of the sofa is a Two-Arms rotating sconce by the mid-century French designer Serge Mouille.

Now, built-in sofas line the perimeter of the room and utilize the room’s shape better.

An L-shaped island wrapped in Pietra Cardosa stone has a prep sink, more storage, and a seating counter, from which you can gaze into the backyard.
