With the help of a few friends and a lot of patience, photographer Mandy Lamb transformed an 1890s building into her new home.

Sitting jauntily on its block, this renovated residence in Seattle’s Mount Baker neighborhood retained the original home’s footprint. The architect (and daughter of the homeowner) opened up the living spaces inside and overhauled the exterior and landscaping to give it a more contemporary presence. Cambium Landscape created the outdoor spaces which perfectly balance hardscape with greenery.

Instead of damaging the original exposed beams by scraping off the years of leftover paint, the beams now show the history of the home and are paired with new wood elements, such as the closet built-in, flooring, and vanity.

Rebuilding the rear addition gave Aleksandra a chance to play with its form, and make it contrast with the historic body of the Edwardian. Large glass doors lighten up the kitchen and connect it to the deck and backyard.

Aleksandra and Daniel removed the gray stucco, which revealed the original lap siding underneath was rotting, and replaced it with fiber cement siding board from Hardie instead.

The restored home rests on a quiet street in the historic village of Kinderhook, located less than a 30-minute drive from Albany. A stone walkway leads to the main side entrance.
