Architecture firm _naturehumaine designed a dream hideaway in eastern Quebec, complete with a centralized fireplace. The modern fireplace was built into a custom, multi-purpose cabinet welded from sheets of hot-rolled steel. It stores firewood on one end with an open shelve, holds a TV, and even acts as a guardrail for the staircase.

The primary bedroom features organic sheets and towels, plus immersive views of nature. “Watch the shadows get longer on the meadow as the sun sets,” Bruce suggests. “Then the moon comes out of the southeast, so you get to see the moonrise from bed.”

Set on an east-west axis, the home stays cool with shading south-facing glass, minimal west-facing glass, and operable windows that allow for natural ventilation. Energy recovery ventilators also bring fresh air into the home.

The clients also prioritized the use of local materials, labor, and products while preserving as much natural stone as possible.
