During the daytime, the house is completely illuminated by natural light. Other energy-efficient features come in the form of the house's super thick building envelope, radiant floor heating, and cross-ventilation.

The mezzanine can easily be transformed into a guest room thanks to the sofa bed and the small adjoining bathroom.

Desert-meets-modernism is the bathroom theme, which incorporates a large plate-glass window with views into a small, enclosed private garden. A sleek marble counter and sink make efficient use of space with restored pebble-dash concrete used on the open shower floor.

Another corner of the yard features a dining area with built-in seating.

New sliding doors from Marvin enable the family to seamlessly move between the indoors and the refurbished patio.

In the dining room, the owners started with a sculptural Palais Royal Table, a Swedish design they obtained via StudioTwentySeven. Above it is a Strikha Pendant lamp by Faina, and the leather chairs are by their design team, Klein Agency. “All our pieces are produced locally here in workshops within a radius of 10 miles,” says Maša.

The black-stained wood that clads the south faade contrasts with the glass on the north façade and blends with the color of the tree trunks that pepper the natural landscape.

The ground floor features Douglas fir flooring. The living room at the front of the house is separated from the entrance hallway by a black steel-framed glazed partition.

The couple fabricated the shelving themselves.

“Many of the houses in the development aren’t too different from the city or suburbs,” says Kilpatrick. “One of our goals was for this project to have a rural feel.”
