Removing a wall between the kitchen and the dining room helped open up both spaces. Legge and Amanda decided to add scalloped ceilings to the dining room and kitchen in a nod to the scalloped details found elsewhere in the home.

The pen shelving keeps the kitchen light and bright, which was the goal of its design. The kitchen and bath fixtures cost about $26,000.

The kitchen was designed with off-white cabinets. Touches of wood and saturated reds in the lighting and flooring add warmth.

The guesthouse has similar built-ins and is outfitted with a reproduction rotating sconce by Serge Mouille and rugs by Stephanie Odegard.

The "appliance garage

In Johnson's daughter's room, he used birch plywood for the built-in wardrobe and desk. The chair is maple and steel and was designed and fabricated by Johnson.

By far the biggest transformation, the new kitchen enjoys high ceilings from the revamped roofline; all new casework, flooring, and finishes; and a large island. The stools are from 2xhome.

The two major architectural interventions happened in the living room, where the architect vaulted the ceiling, replaced the preexisting clunky skylight with three slim ones, and relocated the staircase to the basement. The wall tile outside the powder room is by Fireclay—the homeowner specifically requested all rectangular tile be laid horizontally.

Practical, long-lasting finishes throughout meet Roberta’s dictum that everything should be easy to use. Stone-like Cambria quartz backsplashes and seamless countertops don’t have grout, making it easier to keep things clean.

One renovation request, homeowner Isaac Hase says, “was having a place to drop your shoes.” At the mudroom end of a run of kitchen cabinets, you’ll find another feature the couple asked for. “We wanted to have a dedicated, visible place for our little stash of cookbooks,” Karoline says.

Despite the space’s relatively small size, its galley layout, with countertops on each side, easily accommodates multiple cooks.
